In Michoacan, the Viagras and the CJNG set fire to a lemon production center.

The constant extortion to which lemon producers are subjected in the state of Michoacan is rampant without state or federal authorities doing anything about it.

Hitmen under orders from the criminal leader known as “El Botox” set fire to a lemon packing plant in Apatzingán after the businessman was unable to pay “Derecho de Piso” (right of way)

Citrus growers complain that they must pay up to 4 pesos per kilo to criminals, while the collapse of the price of lemon ruins producers.


Despite the proximity to a National Guard base, the fire consumed the facilities without intervention.

The Tierra Caliente region in the state of Michoacan is now known as “Tierra Sin Ley” (Lawless Land).


In other cases, also in the state of Michoacan, farmers have preferred to throw away their production, instead of being extorted by criminal groups.

Ever since Morena became the ruling party in Michoacan, cartels such as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel CJNG, the Viagras, or La Familia Michoacana have been constantly extorting avocado and lemon producers in the state.

Apatzingán is just one of six municipalities in Michoacán where extortion against lemon growers takes place, which also include Nueva Italia, Antúnez, Buenavista, Tepalcatepec, and Aguililla.
